Artist of the Month
The Lowly Knights
The Lowly Knights
Each month ‘The Art of Irish Music’ pays tribute to the achievements of established Irish musicians from different genres. Our ‘Artist of the Month’ section features and promotes an up and coming Irish artist for the current month. This article is available for the entire month.
The Lowly Knights are a Belfast based 'Grand Ramshackle Folk Opera' group, widely renowned for their gorgeous harmonies, soaring orchestral arrangements, and the kind of melodies that keep you humming for weeks. Dubbed:
“… absolutely breathtaking” - BBC Live Review
and
“elegant, eloquent and soulful” - Hotpress
as our ‘Artist of the Month’, we share with you The Knight’s background and musical achievements.
Formed in 2006, as a side – project made up of six members of local bands, The Lowly Knights began their rise to fame with a one – off hometown performance. Soon after, the group began to perform regularly around Belfast (even on a shopping centre roof!) and in live sessions on BBC Radio. This increasing exposure landed them airplay on many Irish and UK stations (including BBC Radio One), reviews in local and national Irish media and led them to become part of the We Collect Records label.
An ever-expanding number of instruments, including; cello, oboe, guitar, banjo, accordion and fiddle, and a six member strong backing group called the Lowly Knights Choir support The Lowly Knights ‘sing-a-long’ Irish ballads.
The Lowly Knights own style and obvious local influence in their music has set them apart from their contemporaries, which has lead them to support current world renowned artists including Irish performers; Mumford & Sons and Snow Patrol.
The group’s preservation of and contribution to the music of Ireland is an inspiration to other up and coming Irish artists. Although in their infancy, The Lowly Knights are set to go far.
